Met Eireann issues 28-hour weather warning for five counties as snow and heavy rain set to hit

A status yellow rainfall warning has been issued for five counties as the country is set to be hit with brutal weather conditions this week.

Met Eireann has warned that parts of the country could be hit with localised flooding while heavy rain is forecast to hit parts of the North and west of Ireland.

The yellow rainfall alert has been issued for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo and will come into effect from 8pm this evening.

It will be in place until 11:59pm on Tuesday night.

The Met Eireann warning reads: "Heavy rain on Monday night followed by frequent showers during Tuesday will give rainfall accumulations of around 30 to 40mm, bringing a risk of localised flooding."

Meanwhile a status yellow snow warning is set to take effect for Antrim, Tyrone, Derry from 4pm today until 12pm on Tuesday.

Despite the grim weather warnings major change is coming this week with temperatures set to jump again.

However there will still be very heavy rain across the country all throughout the week.

A forecaster said: " On Tuesday, heavy rain and sleet will clear from north Ulster during the morning to leave a breezy and showery day. There will be some bright spells but also widespread showers, some heavy and with a risk of isolated thunderstorms.

"Maximum temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in most areas on Tuesday but highs of just 4 to 7 degrees in north Ulster. Fresh southeast breezes, becoming southwest in direction in southern counties.

"Outbreaks of rain will continue on Tuesday night, mainly over the west and north with showers and clear spells elsewhere. Windy, especially near western and southern coasts with strong and gusty southwest winds, easing towards morning. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees.

"Outbreaks of rain will continue to affect northern and western parts on Wednesday. It will be drier further south and east earlier in the day, with some sunshine, but rain will become widespread later. Highest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees in moderate to fresh mainly south to southwest winds."
