Met Eireann issues 16-hour warning for entire country as freezing weather engulfs Ireland

A 16-hour low temperature weather warning has been issued for the entire country by Met Eireann this afternoon.

Temperatures are set to plummet as low as -4C in parts of Ireland with the status yellow low temperature/ice warning coming into effect at 6pm on Saturday until 10am on Sunday.

The warning, for all 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland, states: "Temperatures will fall to minus 3 or 4 degrees tonight, colder locally away from coasts. This will lead to a widespread hard ground frost and icy surfaces, with potentially dangerous conditions."

Some parts of the country will get dustings of wintry showers over the next 48 hours but there isn't forecast to be any significant snowfall.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Icy patches may linger today as temperatures are slow to rise. Scattered showers, some possibly with sleet to the north, will slowly die out as sunny spells develop this afternoon. Highest temperatures reaching between 3 to 5 degrees generally, a degree or two milder near coasts.

Subzero temperatures and icy stretches are expected this weekend (PA)

"Very cold tonight with a sharp frost and icy conditions forming early in the night as temperatures fall as low as minus 4 degrees inland, lingering at around freezing at the coasts. Largely dry and clear with mist and pockets of fog developing in places, however light northerly winds will bring isolated showers on to northern coasts.

Frost and ice on untreated surfaces will be slow to clear tomorrow, Sunday. It will be dry in many areas with good sunshine, with scattered showers near coasts.

"Some showers will drift further inland in Leinster during the evening, and may be wintry. Bitterly cold throughout the day with highest temperatures of just 2 to 4 degrees generally, with a light to moderate northeast breeze."
