Met Eireann issue urgent weather warning for three counties as brutal conditions hit

Met Eireann have issued a Status Yellow rain warning for three countries across Ireland as miserable weather conditions set in.

The urgent alert is in place for 24 hours from 9pm on Wednesday night until 9pm on Thursday.

The national forecaster is warning of spells of heavy rain at times with accumulations of 30 mm possible.

Mayo, Galway and Donegal are the counties under the rainfall warning.

As for the rest of the country, the forecast is looking similarly bleak.

Wet and windy weather will extend gradually from the Atlantic, becoming widespread early on Wednesday night, with strengthening southerly winds.

Met Eireann say that be it will be wet and windy, with widespread rain for a time, and minimum temperatures 6 to 11C.

A forecaster continued: "Tomorrow, Thursday, will have some bright, dry spells, mainly in the east and south, but it will be mostly cloudy, with scattered showers and more persistent rain at times in the west and northwest.

"In the early evening, rain will turn heavy in Atlantic coastal counties, extending eastwards during the evening and early night, with some heavy falls in Connacht and west Ulster. Maximum temperatures 13 to 16C with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, strong at times in coastal areas."

Thursday night will be windy with rain clearing eastwards but followed by blustery showers or longer spells of rain. Lowest temperatures will be between 6 snd 9C in moderate to fresh and gusty southwesterly winds.

Friday will be "a day of sunny spells and showers, heaviest and most frequent over the western half of the country with a risk of isolated thunderstorms".

There will be good dry spells at times in eastern areas and highest temperatures of 11 to 14C.

Scattered showers will continue in Atlantic counties overnight on Friday, becoming more isolated with good clear spells further east.

Towards morning, showers will merge to longer spells of rain, with lowest temperatures of 6 to 9C in mostly moderate southerly winds.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the forecaster added: "Showers or longer spells of rain for Saturday. Largely cloudy to start the day but good sunny spells will extend from the west during the afternoon. Highest temperatures of just 10 to 13C."

Sunday will see "good sunny spells but scattered showers persisting along with the risk of thunderstorms" and highest temperatures of 11 to 14C.
