Met Eireann issue urgent thunderstorm warning for Ireland as brutal conditions forecast

Met Eireann has issued an urgent weather warning for the entire country with miserable conditions forecast.

The status Yellow thunderstorm warning will be in effect from 6am until 7pm on Thursday across all counties in Ireland.

The national forecaster says there will be thundery spells of rain with the risk of lightning and local hail throughout the day.

They are also urging people to be cautious as there may be localised flooding and hazardous driving conditions.

The warning comes as Met Eireann has forecasted a pretty miserable week ahead.

There will be unsettled weather conditions over the rest of the week, the weekend, and early next week with widespread heavy or thundery showers and a continued risk of spot flooding.

Wednesday night will see showery outbreaks of rain extending from the Atlantic eastwards across the country, with some heavy bursts, and minimum temperatures 12 to 15C.

On Thursday, sunny spells and frequent heavy and occasionally thundery showers in the west during the morning will become widespread by afternoon bringing the risk of some spot flooding. Highest temperatures will be between 16 to 20C.

Thursday night will bring scattered showers and clear spells with lowest temperatures of 12 to 14C.

For Friday, the forecaster says: "Bright spells and showers, some of the showers heavy with the risk of thunderstorms. Showers will merge to longer spells of rain at times in Ulster with the risk of spot flooding. Highest temperatures of 15 to 20C."

There will be showers of longer spells of rain at times overnight on Friday with lowest temperatures of 11 to 14C.

As it stands so far for the weekend, on Saturday, while there will be some sunny spells mixed in, showers will become widespread once again with isolated thunderstorms possible bringing the risk of spot flooding. Highest temperatures of 16 to 19C.

There will be little change on Sunday, with a mix of bright or sunny spells and showers, some of them heavy, with a continuing risk of thundery downpours and spot flooding.

However, it will be somewhat drier and brighter in the Munster, and highest temperatures overall of 15 to 19C.
