Met Eireann's status yellow thunderstorm warning has been extended by five hours and will now be in effect until 10pm tonight.
The national forecaster is expecting hazardous conditions with localised flooding as well as hail showers accompanying the thunder and lightning.
Originally the warning was to be in place from 6am until 7pm but that has now been extended until 10pm.
The entire country, north and south, are under the yellow warning.
Friday's weather does not appear to be any better with more rain and wind.
A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Tonight will be quite breezy with continued showery outbreaks of rain, heaviest and most frequent over the northern half of the country. The best of the drier conditions and clear spells will be in Munster and south Leinster. Lowest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in moderate to fresh westerly winds, occasionally increasing strong.
"Tomorrow will bring thundery showers or longer spells of rain over the northern half of the country with the continued risk of spot flooding. Showers will be more isolated over Munster and south Leinster for most of the day with some bright spells. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees in moderate to fresh west to southwest winds."
