Met Eireann Ireland weather warning as serious alert issued with big airflow change confirmed

Met Eireann has confirmed that a big change is on the way as we finally say goodbye to the wintry weather that has gripped the country over the last two months.

The next five days will see temperatures finally break into the double figures as we see the first sign of a summery change in Ireland.

It comes after a status yellow, wind warning was reissued for Donegal, Galway and Mayo until 8am this morning.

This saw Southwesterly winds reaching mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h and gusts of 80 to 100km/h, highest in coastal areas overnight as winds onshore led to a risk of coastal flooding around high tide.

In Dublin, today will be bright and breezy with sunny spells and highs of 10C but cloud will thicken overnight with rain turning heavy at times.

Tonight will be windy with gales developing near the coast and lows of 1C.

Around the rest of Ireland, rain turning to sleet, mainly over the western parts of the country overnight will fall as snow above high ground leading to temperatures of -1C.

The rain, and any sleet and snow will clear by tomorrow morning, with sunny spells and blustery showers elsewhere.

Further spells of wet and windy weather are currently indicated for next week as Met Eireann confirm a change leading to an "overall mild southerly or southwesterly airflow".

Here's how the next few days are looking according to Met Eireann:

Tomorrow: "Thursday will be another breezy day with sunny spells and passing showers. Top temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees with fresh and gusty southwest winds, moderating later."

Friday: "Mild, wet and windy to begin on Friday, with widespread rain and fresh to strong and gusty south to southeast winds. Brighter more showery conditions will extend from the west during the morning with winds veering southwest and slowly moderating. It will stay cloudy in southern counties, however, where the rain may persist for much of the day maintaining the flood risk. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees."

Saturday: "Showers or longer spells of rain look set to feed up over the country from the south on Saturday morning, accompanied by increasingly blustery southerly winds. However, conditions look likely to improve during the afternoon with drier and brighter intervals developing. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in moderate to fresh south to southwest winds, strong near coasts."

Sunday: "It is currently signalled to be dry with some sunshine across the bulk of the country. However, cloudy conditions with patchy rain and drizzle may affect southeastern counties in the morning, and there is a chance that scattered showers may develop over the western half of the country during the afternoon. Highs of 7 to 10 degrees."
