Met Eireann Ireland weather forecast pinpoints end to heatwave with 'heavy downpours and thunder' warning

Met Eireann has warned of heavy showers and thunder as the extreme heatwave is set to come to an end in Dublin.

A Status Yellow high temperatures warning is in place until 9 am this morning.

Temperatures will be much lower today compared to the last few days when the mercury hit as high as 30C.

It'll be a dry day with spells of hazy sunshine with temperatures of 19C to 22C.

Dry conditions to continue into tonight with temperatures ranging between 12C or 14C.

Tomorrow will see sunny spells with a risk of scattered showers in the afternoon and it'll be a warm day with the highest temperatures of 22C to 25C.

While there is no further forecast for Dublin, the national outlook warns of the "risk of heavy downpours and thunder" next week.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Cooler and unsettled for the week ahead with temperatures back to more average values for mid-summer.

Sunday night


"Sunday night will be mostly dry with good clear spells in a light to moderate northwesterly breeze, and lowest temperatures of 11C to 15C.

Monday

"Turning less humid on Monday. There will be a fair amount of cloud around with the best of the sunshine in the south and southeast.

"Showery outbreaks of rain will develop during the day, mainly in western parts. Highest temperatures typically ranging 18C to 23C, warmest in the east with light to moderate northwest breezes.

"Showery outbreak of rain will become more widespread on Monday evening and night. Lowest temperatures are 11C to 14C.

Tuesday


"The rain will clear early Tuesday followed by fresher conditions and some scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 16C to 20C.

"The following couple of days will be showery with the risk of heavy downpours and thunder, mixed in with bright or sunny spells too.

Further forecast

"Highest temperatures typically in the mid to high teens by day and falling to between 9C and 11C at night. It looks like becoming a bit breezier at times by mid-week too with freshening westerly breezes."
