Met Eireann has issued an urgent forecast update as the Met Office confirmed a snow and ice warning for six counties.
Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry will see "wintry showers that may lead to some travel disruption" until 10am this morning but further disruptive wintry weather is said to be on the way for the whole of Ireland.
Met Eireann states that Friday and Saturday will see "possible snow showers over high ground" with temperatures dipping to as low as -3C.
Europe Weather has added that a 'massive damaging arctic blast' is to hit the country mid-week leading to a sharp front.
The weather experts said: "The first impact is over the UK and Ireland, then the core will spread towards central Europe and the Mediterranean tonight into mid-week days.
"The massive Arctic cold blast is heading towards continental Europe. Then, destructive and widespread frost to vulnerable vegetation is expected across central Europe."
Here's how Met Eireann are forecasting the next few days will turn out:
Today: "Cold and breezy today with sunny spells and scattered showers. Some of the showers will be wintry. Highs of just 7 degrees, with an added wind chill due to the fresh northerly winds."
Tonight: "Cloud and outbreaks of light rain will move southwards overnight, however rainfall amounts will be small and many areas will stay dry. Clear spells at times will allow temperatures to fall to between -1 to +1 degrees with a slight frost developing, in a light to moderate northwest breeze."
Tomorrow: "Becoming less cold on Wednesday as winds turn westerly. A generally cloudy day overall with some outbreaks of patchy light rain and drizzle, but a lot of dry weather too. Highs of 7 or 8 degrees, in light to moderate westerly winds."
Thursday: Mostly cloudy on Thursday, but staying largely dry through Munster and Leinster. Some patchy light rain and drizzle in Connacht and Ulster will sink southeastwards later. Highs of 8 to 10 degrees in moderate southwest winds, strong on western and northern coasts.
Friday: "Cool with a mix of sunny spells and showers. The showers will be heavy at times through the afternoon with the risk of hail and thunder, and some snow is possible over high ground in Ulster. Highs of 5 to 9 degrees, coldest in Ulster in light northerly winds.
A widespread sharp frost on Friday night with icy patches, in lows of -1 to -4 degrees."
Saturday: "Another relatively cold day with sunny spells and scattered heavy showers. The showers will turn increasingly wintry, with a mix of rain, hail, and sleet with snow over high ground. There is a risk of isolated thunderstorms also. The showers will be most frequent through the afternoon with good dry spells in the morning and evening. Highs of 6 to 8 degrees in a light northerly breeze.
Very cold on Saturday night with lows of -1 to -3 degrees."
