Met Eireann: Heavy rain continues across Ireland with three counties at risk of flooding

Met Eireann’s forecast for the rest of the week sees three counties in particular battered by rain and warned of resulting flooding.

On Thursday, showers will continue to move northwards across east Munster and Leinster this morning, and “will be heaviest and most persistent in the southeast where there is an ongoing risk of localised flooding,” according to the Irish forecaster.

Waterford, Wexford, Wicklow are under a status orange rainfall warning this morning until 8am, following significant accumulations of rainfall overnight.

Meanwhile, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Tipperary have an active yellow warning until 7am am after heavy rainfall.

This rain will clear later this morning but scattered heavy showers in the west will extend eastwards - with some moments of sunshine developing too.

Another spell of rain will move into the southwest late this afternoon, spreading across Munster during the evening and becoming heavy and possibly thundery in places.

Highest temperatures will range from 12 to 15 degrees in light to moderate south to southwest breezes.

The rain will continue overnight into Friday, and by morning, any lingering rain in the east and northeast will clear into the Irish Sea and “will be followed by sunny spells and scattered showers.”

Showers will once again become frequent and heavy in the west by afternoon, "merging into longer spells of rain as they track eastwards."

It will be driest with the best sunshine across the eastern half of the country with highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees.

Heading into the weekend, Saturday will bring a day of sunny spells and showers.

The most frequent rain is expected over the western half of the country but will become more isolated during the evening.

Much of the eastern half of the country will again see a lot of dry weather during the day with the best of the sunny spells.

Sunday will see heavy rain continue in the east and north, with sunny spells and heavy showers elsewhere.

It will be a breezy day with moderate to fresh southeast to southwest winds which are predicted to be strong at times near coasts.
