Met Eireann forecasts glorious weather with sunshine and 20C temperatures reaching Ireland

Ireland is in for some glorious weather on Friday and Saturday with sunshine and temperatures hitting up to 20C.

After a week of thundery showers, it will be mainly dry from here on apart from some rain on Saturday night and Sunday as rainfall amounts are set to drop.

However, it is expected to become cooler than average next week, with temperatures in the mid to low teens, before it heats up again next weekend.

Long-range weather models, which are subject to change this far out, show temperatures reaching the mid-20s next weekend, thanks to a plume of hot air from the Mediterranean.

Maps appear to show temperatures hitting the mid-20s - and potentially up to 25C - during the weekend of May 19-21.

The long-range forecast for the following week, May 19 to 25, continues: “Uncertainty grows in the forecast and there is a less clear signal for any pressure pattern to become dominant for the week. However, there is a slight signal for low pressure to the southwest of the country. Nevertheless, temperatures will likely be slightly higher than average for late May, with rainfall amounts signalled to be lower than average.”

Here is Met Eireann's forecast for the next seven days:

Friday, May 12

Some patches of mist or fog early this morning. These will clear and today will be mainly dry with sunny spells. A few isolated showers may develop in the late afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with light northerly breezes.

Tonight will be dry with long clear spells. Some patches of mist and fog will develop in the near calm conditions. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees.

Saturday, May 13

On Saturday morning, any patchy mist and fog will soon clear to give a largely dry day with spells of sunshine. Cloud will increase from the west during the evening. Quite warm with highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees and light, variable breezes.

Saturday night will start off dry. Rain and drizzle will develop in the west and northwest around midnight and will spread eastwards to most areas overnight. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees with mostly light southerly winds, which will be fresher along Atlantic coasts.

Sunday, May 14

Sunday will start off mostly cloudy and damp with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. The rain will gradually clear eastwards with sunny spells and perhaps a few light showers following. It will become noticeably cooler as the rain clears with moderate to fresh northwest winds becoming established and highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.

Sunday night will be mainly dry with clear spells and a few showers in the northwest. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees with light to moderate northwest breezes.

Monday, May 15

Monday will be mainly dry with bright or sunny spells and a few showers. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees with light to moderate northwest breezes.

Tuesday, May 16

Tuesday will continue cool and mainly dry with bright or sunny spells and a few showers. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with moderate northwest breezes.

Wednesday, May 17

Wednesday will also be mainly dry with bright or sunny spells and light north to northwest breezes. Highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees.

Thursday, May 18 and Friday, May 19

On Thursday and Friday, there'll be a greater chance of some showers. It will become a bit milder.
