Met Eireann forecasts cold miserable weekend weather of sleet and gale force winds

Met Eireann has forecast a miserable weekend of sleet, wind, rain and freezing night time temperatures.

The day time temperatures for Friday and Saturday and set to remain between 3 and 6 degrees before dropping to as low as freezing at night time.

Friday is set to see "widespread showers" that will fall as sleet and snow over hills as well as heavy winds that will reach gale force at coasts.

The forecast fro Friday reads: "A cold windy day with temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees. There'll be widespread showers, heavy at times, and falling as sleet and snow over hills and mountains, particularly in the north. Northwest to north winds will be fresh to strong and gusty and will reach gale force on coasts."

The mercury will drop as low as 0 degrees tonight with strong winds prevailing and rain will continue to fall in coastal areas.

Friday night's forecast reads: "Temperatures tonight will fall to between zero and plus 2 degrees and the strong winds will continue. There will be strong gales on the Irish Sea with fresh to strong northwest to north winds inland.

"Showers will become mainly isolated to coastal regions for a time with long clear spells elsewhere, later on the showers becoming more widespread through Connacht and Ulster and some will fall as sleet and with snow over hills and mountains."

The rain, sleet, strong winds and chilly temperatures will all continue on Saturday.

The forecast reads: "The strong winds and cold weather continue through Saturday with temperatures during the day ranging between 3 and 6 degrees.

"There'll be further showers, again some of sleet, mainly around coastal areas and a little more widely through Ulster and Connacht with longer sunny spells in Munster and Leinster. The winds will begin to ease later in the day."
