Met Eireann forecast freezing weather to hit Ireland but will it snow?

Met Eireann has warned that temperatures will drop to -2 tonight, as bitter and frosty conditions will continue through the rest of the week.

The forecast says: “Tonight will be dry with long clear spells and just the chance of a light shower in the northwest. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +3 degrees generally.

“Frost and mist patches will form in mostly light southwesterly or variable breezes.”

The cold weather shows no signs of reversing with widespread frost and fog is expected to form by night and the fog will be persistent in places during the day.

Despite this, there are brighter days ahead, with continuing settled and largely dry through the rest of the week as high pressure dominates our weather.

Weather expert, Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather shared on Twitter: “A cool morning in the Northwest but a good day ahead once any cloud and light rain clears the South.”

Wednesday

Wednesday will be a dry day with good spells of sunshine.

Becoming a little cloudier later in parts of the north and west with the odd spot of drizzle possible developing.

Wednesday night will see a dry night with good clear spells, especially over Munster and Leinster.

With lowest temperatures expected of -2 to +2 degrees with frost forming.

It will stay slightly milder in parts of Connacht and Ulster under cloudier conditions with the odd patch of drizzle possible.

Thursday

Thursday will be a much cloudier day over the northwestern half of the country with the odd patch of drizzle as temperatures are set to drop in towards the evening.

It will be dry elsewhere with good spells of sunshine though fog will be slow to clear and will persist in parts through much of the day.

Highest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees generally, a little milder near Atlantic coasts, in mainly light southerly or variable breezes.

The lowest temperatures will range from 0 to 5 degrees.

Further south, it will be colder and clearer with frost forming. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees.

Friday

Fog will once again be slow to clear through the morning and will linger for much of the day in places.

Otherwise, it will be a largely dry day with a mix of cloud and sunny spells.

Continuing dry for most but there will be some patchy light rain and drizzle, mainly over Ulster and Connacht.

Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees. Fog will form again in light breezes.
