Met Eireann forecast freezing start to May Bank Holiday as temperatures take huge nosedive

Scorching 20C temperatures will be a thing of the past as weather conditions take a horrible turn this week.

The weather is set to remain relatively unsettled in the coming days, with more rain expected to hit as things gradually turn chilly.

However, experts have warned that temperatures will truly plummet over the weekend due to the arrival of some heavy, thundery showers.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Cool and bright to begin on Friday with sunny spells, but cloud will bubble up and showers will break out through the middle of the day.

"Again, some of the showers will be heavy with hail and a risk of slow-moving thundery downpours. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with light northeast or variable breezes.

"Friday night will be another cold and largely dry night under clearing skies with a patchy late season frost. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +4 degrees.

"Saturday will be another cool and bright start with sunny spells, with cloud tending to bubble up through the morning to produce scattered showers for the afternoon.

"Again some of the showers will be heavy and possibly thundery. Highest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees with light breezes.

"Current indications suggest a drier, less showery and slightly milder interlude on Sunday, but potentially turning more unsettled again into Bank Holiday Monday with rain spreading from the Atlantic."
