Met Eireann five-day weather forecast: Rare event to bring unusual conditions to Ireland

A rare 'La Nina' event will bring some unusual conditions to Ireland over the next week.

The phenomenon happens once every few years, and it can have a significant influence on our weather.

The event has a strong impact on the north Atlantic jet, which will then hit Ireland with far greater intensity than usual. It is expected to bring "cool, unsettled conditions" next week.

Met Eireann wrote on Twitter last night: "A La Niña event has been declared, how does this affect us?

"La Niña does not always impact our weather but it can intensify the north Atlantic jet. A strong jet over Ireland can bring cool, unsettled conditions."

They also showed a dramatic map demonstrating the expected path and severity of the jet stream heading straight for Ireland.

Here is Met Eireann's full five-day forecast:

Monday

Cloudy tomorrow morning with further rain or drizzle. The rain will clear slowly northeastwards through the day with bright spells and isolated showers following from the west, with more frequent showers later in the day. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with moderate westerly breezes.

Tuesday

Tuesday will be breezy with widespread showers, some of which will be heavy. There will be some dry and sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees with moderate to fresh west to northwest winds. Showers will continue on Tuesday night, mainly confined to northern and western areas. Drier elsewhere with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees, in a moderate westerly breeze.

Wednesday

Wednesday will be another showery day with sunny spells. Showers will ease through the afternoon and evening. Cool with highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees with light to moderate westerly breezes.

Thursday

Current indications are that showers will continue on Wednesday night and Thursday. However, there is potential for wet and windy conditions spreading from the southwest overnight Wednesday and persisting into Thursday.

Friday and the weekend

Cool and showery conditions will continue to the end of the week and into the weekend.
