Met Eireann confirms rainy weekend ahead of return to sunnier conditions next week

The forecast for the weekend is set to be a bit unsettled with some sunny spells and patchy drizzle expected.

While Saturday is set to bring mixed conditions for all, it looks as if Sunday will see a return of some sunshine along the east coast - with isolated showers expected.

Looking ahead to next week, conditions look likely to remain more settled than recent weather, however, the rain will be sticking around for a few regions.

Saturday will start off dry in most areas, with sunny spells, but some patchy drizzle will develop along parts of the east and southeast coasts.

Outbreaks of rain and drizzle are also due to develop along the Atlantic coast during the morning and early afternoon and will spread eastwards during the evening.

Some heavier showers will appear, mainly in west Munster and west Connacht with top temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees.

Then on Sunday, cloudy and damp conditions will start the day, however, these will clear and brighten up, as sunny spells and some well-scattered showers elsewhere extend eastwards.

Showers will become more widespread by the afternoon, with some of them turning heavy with a chance of isolated thunderstorms in the west and northwest.

The best of the sunshine will be had along the east coast, while western counties are in for the worst of the rain.

The highest temperatures will be between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius, in a light to moderate westerly breeze.

Heading into next week, the forecast shows overall dry and sunny conditions with just isolated showers in the west.

This will continue into Tuesday which will be a mainly dry day with sunny spells - although clouds will begin to build across the western half of the country with patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

Highest temperatures of 17 to 19 degrees Celsius, in mostly moderate southwest breezes, increasing fresh to strong on west and northwest coasts in the afternoon.
