Met Eireann confirm Storm Evert will 'clip' Ireland as urgent weather warning issued

Met Eireann has said that Storm Evert will 'clip some southern counties' this evening but the worst of the conditions will be experienced in the UK.

On Thursday morning, the UK Met Office named Storm Evert and the low-pressure system will track to the south of Ireland before moving across the southern half of the UK tonight and tomorrow.

In a statement released to the Irish Mirror, a Met Eireann spokesperson said: "Met Office UK named Storm Evert earlier today, the low-pressure system will track to the south of Ireland before moving across the southern half of the UK tonight and tomorrow bringing strong winds and heavy rain to S Wales & S England – so the worst of the weather will be experienced in the UK.

"The northern edge of Storm Evert will clip some southern counties, bringing a spell of breezier conditions and heavy rain this evening and tonight – warnings issued for Cork, Waterford & Wexford."

A status yellow rainfall warning has also been issued for Cork, Waterford and Wexford.

The warning states that 'heavy or thundery showery rain is expected with the risk of spot flooding"

The warning is in place from 3pm on Thursday until 5am on Friday, July 30

As for the coming days, here's what's expected:

Tonight

The rain will spread along the counties on the east coast tonight with scattered showers elsewhere and occasional clear spells.

Friday morning and afternoon

Frequent showers will develop in the west and they will move east during the morning and early afternoon, turning heavy or thundery at times, but also mixed with the best of the sunny spells.

Friday night

The showers will become confined to the west coast and the southwest early in the night. A mild night is expected with temperatures not dropping below 10 to 13 degrees.

Saturday morning and afternoon

A cloudy start with some light showers. The showers will be more frequent through the afternoon but they will ease off by evening time with spells of sunshine developing.

Saturday night

Dry and clear but a few isolated showers will develop near the north and west coasts.

Sunday morning

There will be a lot of clouds on Sunday morning with well-scattered showers too. As the afternoon develops, it's set to be mostly dry with some bright spells.

The best of the sunshine will be towards evening with highs of 16 to 19 degrees.

Sunday night

Dry and clear with some showers touching the eastern and western coasts.

Bank Holiday Monday

A dry day is expected with sunny spells, but there will be a few scattered light showers too. Highs of 17 to 20 degrees.
