Met Eireann confirm 'orange heatwave warning' could be issued followed by big change

Ireland could be hit with an orange warning as the scorching weather is set to continue this week.

Met Eireann's Jean Cusack said a yellow warning will be in place on Wednesday and Thursday as the mercury is set to hit 29C.

However, the midlands could see temperatures going higher with the risk of an orange warning.

She added that the temperatures in Ireland could actually reach or get close to the hottest July on record so far which was 32.3C in Elphin, Co Roscommon on July 19, 2006.

But there is some good news as thundery showers will bring some well-needed respite on the weekend.

Speaking on Today with Claire Byrne on RTE Radio One, she said: "For a lot of the night the temperature will be an excess of 20C. Not as bad heat-wise this coming weekend.

"We expect some thundery showers developing. So it will be warm for people on their holidays but not as hot."

A 'High Temperature' weather advisory is currently in place until Friday with the national forecast warning that it will continue to be very warm for the week.
