Mesut Ozil starts, Maitland-Niles in - Arsenal lineups Mikel Arteta should pick vs Southampton

Arsenal need a win.

Back-to-back defeats on the Premier League restart was not what anyone connected with Arsenal ordered.

And they take on a Southampton side who got the restart off to a perfect start last week when they won 3-0 at Norwich City.

Mikel Arteta has been beset by injuries so far in this second stanza of the campaign, and he will not have too many options to choose from when it comes to naming his starting XI.

We asked our writers to run the rule over the Arsenal squad and name their team for the clash at St Mary's. Here's what they cam up with.

Mikel Arteta on Bernd Leno injury boost

Art de Roche - Arsenal writer

The chance Emi Martinez has been waiting for has finally presented itself and he must do everything to capitalise on that.

Bernd Leno's injury was unfortunate but there is no time for the Argentine to feel sentimental as he must build on his steady outing at Brighton.

Kieran Tierney will be the only change to the backline. Sead Kolasinac didn't take enough risks when he was given his chance and with a week since his last game, the Scot should add much-needed energy to support Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang down the left.

It appears Mikel Arteta is set on using a 4-3-3 and with Granit Xhaka not quite ready to return, Matteo Guendouzi will be at the base of midfield once again.

Bukayo Saka was impressive in central midfield at Brighton, blending his attacking and defensive duties extremely well, but once again, Dani Ceballos failed to build on his pre-lockdown form.

Having praised Ainsley Maitland-Niles' shift in attitude, now may be the time to give the 22-year-old the chance to prove himself in midfield.

Nicolas Pepe responded to Arteta's challenge in exactly the right fashion at Brighton so himself and Aubameyang keeping their places out wide won't be surprising. The club captain did seem to have more joy linking up with Alexandre Lacazette than Eddie Nketiah, however, which may see the Frenchman start at St. Mary's.

de Roche's team: Martinez; Bellerin, Mustafi, Holding, Tierney; Maitland-Niles, Guendouzi, Saka; Pepe, Lacazette, Aubameyang.

With the FA Cup showdown against Sheffield United on the horizon, it will be interesting to see if Mikel Arteta prioritises that over the top-four battle.

Tenth in the league, awful away from home and facing a more than capable Southampton side has all the recipes for another difficult outing for the Gunners.

Although, with their backs against the wall it could bring out the best in some players.

Some decisions have already been enforced. Emiliano Martinez starts in goal and despite Sokratis potentially being available, I'd go with Rob Holding in central defence again.

Midfield is where the Gunners have really struggled all season, and with Granit Xhaka unlikely to be risked, I would go for a Matteo Guendouzi-Ainsley Maitland-Niles partnership.

This would also mean a recall for Mesut Ozil in a 4-2-3-1 formation as Bukayo Saka is rested. Gabriel Martinelli's injury means no rest for captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but Nicolas Pepe and Alexandre Lacazette could drop to the bench with the FA Cup tie in mind.

Deniran-Alleyne's team: Martinez; Bellerin, Mustafi, Holding, Kolasinac; Guendouzi, Maitland-Niles; Nelson, Ozil, Aubameyang; Nketiah.
