Mesut Ozil's Twitter activity during Arsenal's defeat did not go unnoticed

Mesut Ozil's Twitter activity was quickly noticed as he watched Arsenal get smashed by Aston Villa without him.

The German has been left out of both Premier League and Europa League squads by Mikel Arteta.

It means he has likely played his last game for the north London outfit with his contract expiring next summer.

However, the World Cup winner was not happy with the decision and slammed his employers in a damning statement.

But fans were desperate to see the playmaker in action as they watched Arsenal toil against Aston Villa.

Dean Smith's men rocked up to the Emirates and smacked the Gunners 3-0.

And as bad as Arsenal were at the back, their efforts further up the pitch were not much better after managing just two shots.

Supporters tweeted the German with messages such as "free Ozil" and "I miss you", which the midfielder liked back.

Other fans caught sight of Ozil's actions on Twitter and they quickly went viral during the match.

The ex-Real Madrid star, who has not played since March, has since unliked most posts.

After the match, Arteta took full responsibility for the thrashing - which saw Bukayo Saka score an own goal and Ollie Watkins net a quickfire double.

"First of all congratulations to Aston Villa for the way they played and the victory," he told Sky Sports.

"After that, we performed below our standards and I have to say it's the first time I've seen us play and we weren't a team.

"I take full responsibility. We didn't start well enough, we got away with VAR for an offside situation but we lost all the races, the duels and we were sloppy on the ball.

"When we created chances we didn't hit the target. It's a really bad combination.

"We left spaces and on the counter we looked really vulnerable.

"I take full responsibility. I am responsible to make the team perform on the pitch and today we were not a team and it is my job. It is why I am standing here."
