Mesut Ozil has put aside speculation regarding his future to congratulate Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney.
Whilst the Arsenal midfielder has been linked with a move to Fenerbahce, the former England international has embarked on a new chapter in his career.
On Friday afternoon it was confirmed that Rooney has been appointed as the new Derby County manager - marking his first venture into management - meaning he's also officially retired as a player.
Despite being rivals on the pitch from when Ozil arrived at the Emirates Stadium in the summer of 2013 to when Rooney left United four years later, there's clearly mutual respect between the pair.
In fact, Ozil has described Rooney as one of English football's best ever players in an amazing show of respect to the new Derby boss.
Taking to Instagram, the playmaker paid tribute to the Man United and England legend with a classy message.
"Congrats on your incredible football career @waynerooney!," Ozil posted. "You will always be remembered as one of the best in English football history.
"Good luck on your new chapter."
Ozil's message to Rooney came hours before a major development regarding his own future came to light.
It's no secret that the 32-year-old has been out of favour at Arsenal this season and was not even named by manager Mikel Arteta in the Premier League or Europa League squads.
And it would appear that Ozil's exit is closer than ever.
According to The Athletic, the 32-year-old and the Gunners have reached an agreement in principle to terminate his reported £350,000-a-week contract with immediate effect.
Therefore Ozil will become a free agent after seven-and-a-half-years at Arsenal and if all goes to plan the attacking midfielder will travel to Fenerbache this weekend ahead of completing a free transfer.
