Mesut Ozil's bizarre behaviour towards Marco Silva after being substituted at Everton

Sunday was not a good day for Arsenal.

The Gunners went to Goodison Park knowing that a victory over Everton would see them leap above their North London rivals and into third place in the table, but they ended up losing the game 1-0.

Veteran Phil Jagielka - who wasn't even supposed to be starting the match - scored the game's only goal after just 10 minutes, as he replaced the ill Michael Keane to spectacular effect, becoming the oldest goalscorer in the Premier League this season at the age of 36 years and 233 days.

Arsenal - who were being captained by Mesut Ozil - turned in a limp display, and were unable to seriously test Jordan Pickford as they looked to force their way back into the game.

Marco Silva lifts the lid on Unai Emery spat during Arsenal's defeat at Everton

Seeking to shake things up, Unai Emery replaced Sead Kolasinac and Mohamed Elneny with Aaron Ramsey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at half-time, and then later he took off Ozil and brought on Alex Iwobi.

None of the chances worked though, and Ozil was left cutting a frustrated figure on the bench as the game ticked towards a conclusion.

Everton 1-0 Arsenal: Five talking points as Gunners' top four hopes dealt blow

Not long after he was subbed, the German watched on as Emery and Everton boss Marco Silva became involved in a war of words on the touchline.

Bizarrely, Ozil then decided to throw his coat in the direction of the Portuguese manager, although it isn't clear if he was the intended target.

It didn't hit Silva, instead landing near a member of his coaching staff, but it was an odd move from Ozil, who continued to look thoroughly fed up throughout the rest f the game.

Arsenal loss leaves them in fourth place, a point behind Spurs, with both having played 32 games .
