Mesut Ozil's Arsenal exit '90 per cent confirmed' ahead of January transfer window

Mesut Ozil is close to joining Fenerbahce according to one of the Turkish side's chiefs.

The German has long been linked with the Arsenal exit door having fallen out of favour under Mike Arteta.

He has been frozen out at the Emirates after being omitted from the Premier League and Europa League squads.

But Fenerbahce congress member Murat Zorlu is "90 per cent sure" Ozil will make a move to Turkey in the January transfer window.

The World Cup winner's contract expires in the summer and Arsenal are desperate to get him off the wage bill.

He signed a mammoth deal worth £350,000-a-week in Arsene Wenger's final season which has made it hard for the north Londoners to find a buyer.

But his nightmare spell at the Emirates could soon be over if reports in Turkey are to be beleived.

Zorlu told Sport Digitale : “A source, who’s very well connected to the club has told me that Mesut Ozil is likely to become a Fenerbahce player during the next transfer window.

"I would say 90% he will join us in one month.”

Ozil has regularly been linked with a move to one of Turkey's top clubs.

His wife was named Miss Turkey in 2014 and has a big following in the eastern European country.

While the player himself is of Turkish descent.

Mikel Arteta has left the German out of his domestic and European squads (PA)

Ozil has not played a single minute this season but has previously expressed his desire to see out his Arsenal contract.

Arteta, when questioned on his decision to axe the German, maintains he was given sufficient opportunity to stake his claim for a more regular role.

But both he and predecessor Unai Emery have struggled to accommodate Ozil.

The German has often been criticised for his lack of work rate off the ball despite his undeniable creative flair.

Ozil moved to Arsenal in 2013 from Real Madrid for a then club record £42.5m and has gone on to make 254 appearances and score 44 times.
