Mesut Ozil posts cryptic tweet after being left on the bench for Arsenal's win over Aston Villa

Mesut Ozil was somewhat surprisingly left out of the Arsenal team to face Aston Villa for the 3-2 win.

The German playmaker was awarded his first start of the season against Watford last Sunday but was then rested for the midweek win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Despite playing only 70 minutes of football, Emery opted to leave Ozil at home for their trip to Germany and dropped his number ten for the clash with Villa.

Ozil was ineffective against the Hornets in a game where Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2.

With that clearly in his mind, Emery opted for young winger Saka, who scored in midweek and registered two assists in the Europa League against Eintracht.

Despite the Gunners trailing twice to Dean Smith's side, Emery did not require Ozil's services with the 30-year-old remaining an unused substitute.

Arsenal 3-2 Aston Villa: Unai Emery full press conference

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Ozil posted a picture of himself in training with the caption: 'Always have faith. #Mondaytraining #M1Ö #YaGunnersYa'

Unai Emery did not mention the German playmaker in his post-match press conference, but was full of praise for Matteo Guendouzi, who won the penalty for Nicolas Pepe's first ever Arsenal goal.

"With Matteo last year he progressed when he came here. I like that spirit. He has talent but above all his attitude, energy, commitment and behaviour," he said.

"He's one player who is angry when he's not playing. I like that. When they are angry they're asking you to play. When you decide to let them play they know they have a commitment to do all we needed. He is improving.

"I want to be calm with him, humble and continue improving and growing up with us."
