Mesut Ozil drops huge Fenerbahce transfer hint and compares Turkish giants to Real Madrid

Mesut Ozil has dropped possibly his clearest hint yet that he wants to force through a move to Fenerbahce in January.

The Arsenal outcast continues to be linked with a transfer to the Turkish giants having not featured for the Gunners all season.

His days at the Emirates are numbered with his contract in north London set to expire at the end of the season.

But his departure could come sooner than the summer, and Fenerbahce appear to be leading the race for his signature.

MLS side DC United have also been linked, but Ozil has suggested a switch to Turkey could be on the cards.

When asked which Istanbul district is his favourite in a Twitter Q&A, Ozil replied "Kadıköy", which is where Fenerbahce play.

Ozil was then pressed on his fondness for the club, and he tweeted: "I grew up as a Fenerbahce fan as a kid in Germany - every German-Turkish person supports a Turkish team when they grow up in Germany.

"And mine was Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce is like Real Madrid in Spain. The biggest club in the country."

When asked whether he will continue his playing career after leaving Arsenal, Ozil added: "I definitely will. There are two countries I want to play football in before I retire: Turkey and USA.

"If I went to Turkey, I could only go to Fenerbahce."

Fenerbahce president Ali Koc has revealed the club are "closer than before" to securing Ozil's services.

"Let me tell you the latest on Mesut Ozil," Koc told Canal+ . "We’ve said it would be a dream for Fenerbahce.

"The club knows what the coach wants and our transfer policy is guided by that. There hasn’t been an official announcement.

"What I can say is we are closer than before. There may be a resolution, there may not be a resolution. Fenerbahce SK will make the announcement when the time comes."
