Mesut Ozil claims he "wishes he could help" Arsenal amid ongoing exile

Mesut Ozil claims he "wishes he could help" Arsenal and opened up on the "very difficult" and "frustrating" at the club.

Ozil, 32, is in a state of exile at the Emirates and has not featured for the club since March, before the first national lockdown.

The Gunners have endured a disastrous start to the season in the World Cup winner's absence, with their tally of 14 points in 14 league games their worst total since the 1974/75 campaign.

Meanwhile, any hopes Arsenal had of a run to the late stages of the Carabao Cup were dashed on Tuesday night as Manchester City ran out dominant 4-1 victors at the Emirates.

Ozil acknowledged it is a challenging time for everyone with a connection to the north London club as he declared his desire to help lift them out of the doldrums.

Asked if he is "happy at Arsenal " by a fan during a Twitter Q&A, Ozil responded: "It’s a very difficult time for everyone around the club – not just for me.

"The situation is frustrating for everyone. Of course I would wish I could help the team especially right now, but as long as I don’t get the chance I just hope that we get better results very soon again.

"But let's stay positive."

Ozil was not named in Arsenal's squads for the Premier League or Europa League this season, though it is possible for him to return to the fold in January.

The German playmaker has six months remaining on the lucrative contract he penned in January 2018, while Mikel Arteta refused to rule out a recall earlier this month.

The Arsenal boss said: "He's not in the squad right now. I'm focusing just on the players we have here. But, whatever happens in January, we have some time to decide."
