Mesut Ozil and Arsenal reach major transfer breakthrough as exiled star 'agrees' to tear up eye-watering contract

Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement in principle to terminate Mesut Ozil's contract.

The exiled playmaker's unresolved future has hung over current boss Mikel Arteta this season but he now looks set to finally leave the club.

Ozil was entirely excluded from the Gunners' Premier League squad at the beginning of the campaign but has still collected a huge £350,000-a-week wage - despite only being eligible to play for the U-23s.

But The Athletic report the two parties have come to a resolution and the German international is now poised to depart.

He's been heavily linked with a switch to Turkey with Fenerbahce and DC United in the MLS.

And his new development now looks likely to clear the way for the playmaker's next move.

Ozil, 32, joined Arsenal in 2013 and was a pivotal player for former boss Arsene Wenger.

But his influence gradually waned following the legendary Frenchman's departure.

Neither successor Unai Emery nor Arteta have been willing to grant the former Real Madrid star the game time he craves.

Earlier this season, Ozil admitted he was "deeply disappointed" with the situation.
