Messi 'pocketed' and new name on the shirt - Ex Nottingham Forest striker causes a stir at Copa America

Former Nottingham Forest forward Ben Brereton made his Chile debut against Lionel Messi’s Argentina at the Copa America.

The 22-year-old, whose mother is Chilean, came off the bench on 77 minutes as his country began their campaign with a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Nilton Santos in Rio.

By that stage, the score was 1-1, with Messi giving Argentina a 33rd-minute lead and Eduardo Vargas levelling 13 minutes into the second half. There were no further goals.

It was a positive start for Chile, who face Bolivia, Uruquay and Paraquay in their other group games, with the top four in each five-team group going through to the quarter-finals.

Stoke-born Brereton’s appearance caused such interest he was even trending on Twitter at one stage.

He also raised some eyebrows with the name on the back of his shirt, which read ‘Brereton Diaz’. Players with Spanish names often use both their father and mother's surname.
