Messages to victim's family and 'traumatised' bus driver after woman killed in crash

Messages of support have been sent to a victim's family and a "traumatised" driver after a woman was killed in a bus crash.

Emergency services were called to Victoria Square, in St Helens, shortly before 11am on Thursday to reports a woman had been knocked down.

She was initially rushed to hospital with serious injuries but died a short time later.

Now hundreds of tributes to the victim, believed to be in her 60s, have been posted online.

Many people have also shared their condolences with her loved ones and the bus driver who was involved in the crash.

On Facebook, Lisa Tyrer said: "So sad, condolences to her family & friends.

"Thoughts to the poor bus driver too, they must be traumatised."

Gillian Coakley also said: "So sad RIP.

"My heart goes out to her family and friends.

"God bless you all.

"Feel so sorry for the bus driver as well, must be awful."

Stephanie Brady added: "Aww so sad. Right on top of Christmas as well.

"Plus the poor bus driver."

Road closures were put in place at the scene of the crash with officers erecting a cordon around Victoria Square.

An investigation into the crash was launched at the scene and is currently ongoing.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that emergency services are in St Helens following a serious RTC this morning, Thursday 19 November.

"At around 10.55am, officers and the ambulance service were called to Victoria Square to reports of a collision between a bus and a female pedestrian in her 60s.

"We can confirm that the female pedestrian has sadly passed away in hospital. Her next of kin have been made aware.

"A road closure is in place at the junction of Claughton Street and Cotham Street as our investigation continues. Please avoid the area."
