Message in a bottle from Manchester bombing victim's mum found on beach in Italy

A message in a bottle from the mother of a teenager killed in the Manchester Arena terrorism attack washed up on a beach in southern Italy.

The bottle made a 2,500 mile journey and contained photos of Sorrell Leckowski, 14, a teenager from Leeds who died at the Ariana Grande concert in May 2017, Leeds Live reports.

A cleaner found the bottle among rocks on a beach in Pozzo Pasulo, Salento, in the southern Apulia region of Italy, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported last Friday.

It also contained a message from Sorrell's grieving mum Samantha which read: "Your absence is a pain in the heart that never leaves.

"The moment you died my heart broke up in two: one piece is full of grief the other died with you."

After being found the message in a bottle was brought to Lorenzo Ricchiuti, the mayor of the nearest village, Morciano de Leuca.

He extended an invitation to Samantha and the rest of Sorrell's family to come to visit the town.

The Italian journalist who wrote the article, Claudio Tadicini, said that the bottle was thrown into the sea by Soreell's aunt.

He added: "The mother accepted the invitation of the Mayor of Morciano di Leuca, Lorenzo Ricchiuti, and will come here with her family presumably next winter.

"Sorrell's mother wants the bottle to be kept here."

The teenager, who dreamed of being an architect so that she could build her mum a house, travelled to the concert with her mother and grandmother to pick up her little sister.

The family was caught in the blast when a home-made bomb exploded in the foyer killing 22 people.

Her mother and grandmother were injured but her younger sister was unharmed.
