Merthyr Tydfil Council by-election result

Methyr Tydfil's newest councillor has promised to hit the ground running after winning last week's by-election.

Independent candidate Michelle Jones won the Cyfarthfa seat on the county council with 861 votes.

Labour candidate Mark Prevett finished second with 330 votes ahead of the other Independent candidate David Griffiths who got 180 votes and Paul Phillips of the Conservatives who got just 48 votes.

The by-election came about following the death of Independent councillor Paul Brown in February.

As well as paying tribute to her late predecessor, Cllr Jones said she was looking forward to getting started.

She also gave her thanks to the people who voted adding: "They have believed in me and I will give every effort to work my socks off for the people of the area and the county borough.”
