Merseyside train station set to get its own Tesco supermarket

A new Tesco store will soon open at the entrance to Southport train station.

Tesco Express will occupy 50-52 Chapel Street, in the units currently occupied by the Roman clothing store, after planning permission was granted by Sefton Council.

The store will be the third in the town centre, with one on Eastbank Street and another on Albert Road.

It is the latest change for Chapel Street, with a number of new stores opening.

The Fragrance Shop opened on Saturday (July 24), while One Below opened on the former site of Poundworld earlier this month.

Building work is currently taking place on the former BHS building on Chapel Street to create 30 new aparthotel rooms, new shops, a new bar and a new café.

According to documents on the council's website, Tesco wants to install a new shop front including a telescopic sliding door to the front of the building plus the display of three illuminated and three non-illuminated signs.

The works on site and any construction vehicles must not block the access to Southport train station, where access is required 24 hours a day.

There were no representations made by any of the new store’s neighbours.
