Merseyside town that thinks it's still in Lancashire

A Merseyside seaside town left Lancashire almost fifty years ago, but many people who live there don't see it that way.

Southport became a part of Merseyside in 1974, following a boundary change.

Some people, however, still find this hard to accept, with a number of people living in the town adamant they were born and raised in Lancashire.

With a "PR" postcode and an 01704 telephone code, it is understandable to maybe see why some struggle to see themselves as "Merseysiders".

A recent poll, conducted by LancsLive, asked 1,016 people from Southport whether they thought they should be in Lancashire or Mersyside.

A huge 782 people voted that they thought Southport should be in Lancashire - with the rest voting for Merseyside.

Tony Hey said: "It is, always has been, and always will be in Lancashire."

Justin Waddington said: "The deeds on my house say Southport, County of Lancashire. That's good enough for me."

Fred McCann added: "We are all, including Liverpool, part of the County of Lancashire."

Pam Cobain said: "It is in Merseyside now but with a Preston postcode! Crazy.."

Sharon Brisland said: "It’s in Merseyside but should have remained in West Lancashire."

The Boundary Commission is currently carrying out a consultation which proposes joining four West Lancashire wards to the Southport Parliamentary constituency - and leaving Liverpool-based Sefton Council.

Proposals released by the independent boundary commission in June would see the Southport seat expand into West Lancashire - while losing Ainsdale to Sefton Central across its southern border.

The main impact of the changes would be to make Southport a more strongly Conservative seat as it loses one of its more marginal wards and gains four Tory-voting areas.

Those areas tipped for inclusion in Southport are the West Lancashire wards of North Meols, Rufford, Tarleton and Hesketh-with-Becconsall, which are currently part of the South Ribble constituency.

The changes add just over 3,300 voters to Southport, bringing its electorate to 74,168.

All four new wards routinely vote for Conservative councillors and South Ribble has been a reasonably safe Conservative seat since 2010.

Visitors to Southport beach and Southport Pier can see their Lancashire neighbours on the other side of the Ribble Estuary in Blackpool, Lytham and St Annes.
