Merseyside's unidentified bodies with mysteries yet to be solved

A man found in the River Mersey and another who is believed to have set fire to himself are some of the cases of unidentified bodies in Merseyside that remain unsolved to this day.

Dating back to 1972, there are records of 11 open cases of missing persons in the region by the UK Missing Persons Bureau.

The tragic discoveries were made across a number of sites in Merseyside, including Birkenhead, Seaforth, Bootle and outside one of the city's cathedrals.

According to the records, the ages of the unidentified people range from 25 to 80.

The sad cases still remain open to this day in the hopes someone will come forward with information to help identify these people.

Read on for more about some of the unsolved mysteries of our county.

Man with false teeth discovered in docks

The body of a 25- to 35-year-old man was recovered from Morpeth Dock in Birkenhead on June 5, 1972.

Records on the UK Missing Persons Bureau state the man was in the water for around 12 hours.

The man was described as having false teeth, 'lacking' teeth and a scar above his lip.

He was described as being of thin build and White European, with light brown, receding hair and grey eye colour.

Clothes found on the body included a dark grey Jackson suit, with a tartan wool tie, black lace up leather shoes and a white shirt.

An Accurist gold-plated wristwatch with a black leather strap was also found.

In the body's possession was also a pair of black and gold rimmed spectacles, three keys on a chrome/steel keyring - including a key marked N.M.13.

Body found washed up on rocks

Remains, believed to be those of a male, were found on the rocks at Seaforth shore.

The remains are believed to have been those of a man aged between 30 and 40 years old, with a height of 173cm, and of medium build.

They were found by Merseyside Police on June 29, 1977.

He is believed to have been dead for approximately three months when his remains were found.

Man fond with half bottle of Bells Whiskey

The body of a man was found on the beach at West Kirby on April 20, 1982.

Prior to his death the man, believed to be between 35-45 years-old, was understood to have been drinking and taking drugs, according to Merseyside Police.

He had a distinguishing surgical scar to his abdomen.

His description was listed as White European, of thin build, 178cm tall, with brown receding hair.

On his possession there was a half empty bottle of Bells whiskey, cigarettes, matches and a receipt issued at Liptons Supermarket on Ford Road in Upton, Wirral.

His clothing was described as a woollen overcoat brand Melka Trend, blue Lopez jeans, a blue checked Austin Reed size 15'' shirt and a blue jumper with the label cut out.

White and blue striped underpants and size nine boots were also listed.

A body of a man aged between 60 - 65 years old was found in the River Mersey near the Pier Head.

The discovery was made on October 28, 1982, at around 7.30pm.

The body was described as that of a medium build man, White European in ethnicity, 173cm tall and with grey short hair.

Distinguishing features on the body were listed as lacking upper teeth.

In his possession the man had a pair of ladies bi-focal spectacles and was wearing a gold religious medallion necklace.

His clothing was described as a grey checked jacket, black trousers, a red and black tie, brown suede shoes and a beige/fawn coloured raincoat.

Man with cataracts in both eyes found dead

On May 13, 1984 the body of a man was recovered from Pier Head.

Described as between 50-60 years-old the man's distinguishing features were cataracts on both eyes and lacking lower and upper teeth.

He was White European, of medium build and 163cm tall.

His clothing was listed as a grey/green jacket, charcoal coloured trousers, a white shirt, a blue/grey Herringbone waistcoat, long johns, green socks and size 8 black shoes.

An armed services make pocket watch was found on his possession.

Man found 'four to five' days after he died

In a tragic case, a man was found hanging from the rafter of a house in Liverpool on October 17, 1984.

He is believed to be have been dead for four to five days before he was found.

The man was described as aged between 25 to 35, White European, between 5 ft 8 to 6 ft, with brown hair.

He was wearing a light, blue jacket, dark trousers and black trainers.

'Distinguishing mole' on man found on beach

On March 11, 1985, the body of a man was found on Crosby beach.

The man was described as aged between 25 to 40-years-old and 173cm tall and of stocky build.

His body was found washed up on the shore at Crosby. He had a distinguishing mole on his right leg.

Clothing found near the body included blue jeans, grey and maroon socks and blue/grey lace up footwear with a with red, white and blue motif.

The man's eye colour was not recorded.

Man 'set fire to himself' outside cathedral

On October 25, 1995, a man was reportedly seen setting 'fire to himself' outside the Liverpool Cathedral.

According to reports, he told someone walking past to 'look after his wife and kids.'

The man was described ages between 25 to 35, 5 ft 6, White European, with brown hair.

His eye colour was described as blue and was wearing Reebok trainers.

Man seen 'jumping' in River Mersey and drowned

The body of a man found in the River Mersey has not been identified.

The man was found on August 1, 1999.

Merseyside Police said the man was seen to jump into the River Mersey at Seaforth Rocks, Crosby and subsequently drowned.

His build was described by police as overweight and his appearance - grey short hair, blue eyes and White European in ethnicity.

He was also believed to have been between 40 to 80-years-old and 182cm tall.

Clothing found on the body was a dark green Tweed jacket, size 42 with a Sergio Rossi Label inside.

A black belt and trousers, blue/green socks, blue underpants and vest, a white shirt and slip on black, wide fitting 'Freewalk label' footwear, was also found.

'Presumed' man's age could not be identified

Southport Beach (IYA)

Remains of a man were found on Southport Beach.

The discovery was made by Merseyside Police on March 23, 2003.

The only age range given for the presumed male was one to 100 and no ethnicity, eye colour or hair colour was recorded.

Decomposed foot on Sefton beach

The decomposed foot of a man was found on November 17, 2004.

The foot was found still in a sock and trainer, washed up on the shoreline at Hightown Beach.

Merseyside Police aged the man between 16 -100.

The sock is described as dark coloured, brand 'Wilson' with a 'W' embossed on it.

The trainer is a British size 11 described as a Kickers Tarmac training shoe, which appears dark grey but possibly once blue.

No other details are known.
