Merseyside's most popular surnames and how many people share them

We all know baby names can go in and out of fashion - but surnames less so.

Merseyside's 100 most common surnames include some obvious entries like Davies and Smith, but there are others that reveal a bit about our region's history. There are certain names that you hear all the time in our city, whether they come from the proud Irish heritage or are common in this part of the world.

Even if you think your surname is relatively unique, there's a chance you may share it with thousands of other people in the city. According to Historic UK, surnames weren’t widely used until after the Norman Conquest in 1066.

The Normans introduced names like Robert, Richard and Henry, which became so popular that surnames had to be developed to distinguish between people with the same first name. They were used as a way of identifying a certain aspect of that individual, such as by trade, father's name, location of birth, and were not necessarily inherited.

By 1400 most English families, and those from Lowland Scotland, had adopted the use of hereditary surnames. Website Forebears has tons of data of census records, marriage licences, burial records, and notes on Government, agriculture and its history. So take a look and see if your name makes it.
