Merseyside's busiest train stations as passengers drop by millions across UK

The number of people passing through Merseyside train stations rose this year but lockdown caused passengers to drop by millions across the UK.

Officials say that passenger numbers dramatically dropped across all British station at the end of March.

The Office of Rail and Road suggests that this most likely is due to the impact of Covid-19, as lockdown restrictions advised against all unnecessary travel.

But Merseyside' s biggest stations have only got busier since 2019.

Data from ticket sales show that the busiest station in Merseyside was Liverpool Central station, which saw 16.5 million entries or exits from April 2019 to March 2020.

This was 45,082 per day on average but was higher than the 2018/19 period when 14.6 million entries and exits were made.

Upton station only saw a total of 22,502 uses in the year from April 2019 to March 2020.

That makes the station the least used in Merseyside.

The busiest station in Britain in the 2019/20 year was London Waterloo, which saw a huge 86.9 million entries and exits.

However, this was down 7.7 per cent from last year when there were 94.2 million.

Jay Symonds, Office of Rail and Road senior statistical analyst, said: "The dramatic drop in passenger numbers towards the end of March due to Covid-19 explains much of the drop in usage compared to last year.

“Despite this, Waterloo remains top but we saw a change in the least used station with Berney Arms taking the spot from Denton and Stanlow & Thornton.
