Merseyside police sergeant denies assaulting man in custody

A Merseyside police sergeant has denied assaulting a man who was being held in custody.

Sergeant Peter Robert Jordan, 52, is charged with assaulting Gary Tramp at St Anne Street Police Station in Liverpool.

The assault allegedly took place at the city centre custody suite on December 16, 2018.

An investigation was launched by police watchdog Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after an incident was reported.

Following the conclusion of the investigation the Crown Prosecution Service charged the police officer with assault.

He appeared before District Judge Andrew Shaw at Warrington Magistrates' Court earlier today (July 7).

The police sergeant was represented by Tony Nelson, while Angela Blackmore prosecuted.

The 52-year-old spoke today to plead not guilty to the charge.

He will next appear at Chester Crown Court on August 4.

Jordan remains at police sergeant but is currently on restricted duties, a spokeswoman for Merseyside Police confirmed to the ECHO.
