Merseyside Police respond to rumours of stolen Barcelona team bus in Liverpool

Merseyside Police have confirmed there have been no reports of Barcelona's team bus being stolen amid rumours on social media.

The Catalan club have touched down in England ahead of Tuesday's huge Champions League semi-final second leg and are staying at the Hilton Hotel.

Liverpool fans took to Twitter late on Monday evening claiming there had been sightings of the bus in the Fazakerley area of the city driving erratically.

The rumours appeared to stem from an initial tweet stating: "Are Barca staying at The Hilton? If so, someone best tell them their bus has been robbed and it’s driving round Fazak" and quickly gaining significant traction.

Another user said: "Just been Maccies and seen the Barca team bus steaming down the road - has almost crashed about 15 times..." as multiple people claimed to have seen the bus.

But there were no pictures of the alleged incident, with local police confirming they had not received any reports regarding the vehicle when contacted at 11:30pm.

It did not stop plenty of fans believing the rumour, with the original tweet racking up over 1,000 likes and 500 RTs.

One user noted that the story "could be the greatest Twitter hoax of all-time" as plenty become sceptical of the lack of evidence to back up the bold claims.

Whilst it appears Barcelona's team bus will be intact ahead of Tuesday's clash, it is sure to receive a hostile welcome as it drives in to Anfield for a huge European night.

The visitors have one foot in the final after a 3-0 win at the Nou Camp last week, whilst Liverpool will be without Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino as they eye an unlikely Anfield comeback.
