Merseyside Police have reiterated warnings over the use of electric scooters in public places, after stopping one of the vehicles in Liverpool on Tuesday night.
The scooter was stopped in the L7 area of the city, with the rider reported for road traffic offences.
A spokesman for the Road Policing Unit said: “We are still seeing so many of these about despite much publication to inform people that they are not for use in any public place and it is an offence to ride them on public roads.”
When asked what the difference was between Voi electric scooters – which can be hired for use in many major cities – and the ones the general public use, RPU’s response was: “Voi scooters are council regulated and insured, while riders are accountable and identifiable. Personal scooters are not. Self-owned electric scooters are not able to be legally ridden in public at this time.”
Police had previously warned over the illegal use of e-scooters in the run-up to Christmas, when people were considering buying the vehicles as presents for loved ones.
