Merseyside Police explain secret reason some of their cars have black bonnets

Merseyside Police has explained why some of their vehicles feature a different bonnet design.

Many of us in the region will have spotted the white liveries of the Hyundai i30 and Peugeot 308 patrol cars.

However, you may notice some of these vehicles, which also include BMWs and Vauxhalls, are fitted with half a black bonnet.

One of these vehicles was recently used by Merseyside Police 's Road Policing Unit to respond to a stolen Audi S4 being driven on false plates.

After posting a picture of the incident, which featured the stolen Audi and the police car, one observant follower tweeted to ask about the bonnet.

They said: "Always wondered why half the bonnet is black?"

A team member from the Road Policing Unit responded, revealing the secret behind the different colour.

They tweeted: "Black bonnets = anti-glare. I always thought it was because they looked cool myself but I was wrong!".

Having a dark bonnet reduces reflection and glare during night time when using blue lights.

The force also has yellow and orange liveried vans as well as unmarked police vehicles including BMW 3 series and Peugeot 308
