Merseyside Police are recruiting special constables - here's how to apply

Merseyside Police are recruiting special constables to join the force's August intake for volunteer officers to help keep our streets safe.

The roles have the same powers (and the same uniform) as the force's police officers - but involve volunteering for a minimum of 16 hours per month.

Special constables are volunteer police officers, with no upper age limit and applicants from all walks of life are welcomed by the force.

Successful candidates would work independently and alongside regular officers in local policing, response, roads policing and specialist departments within Merseyside Police.

Training to become a special constable takes place over 14 weekends spread across a five month period - and the application process has several stages.

As well as wearing the same uniform as full-time, paid police, special constables also carry the same powers - including the power of arrest.

However, compared to regular officers, special constables only have to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours a month, with many doing much more than that.

The application process is split into seven stages; the initial application form, an online test, a video interview, an on site assessment day, a medical examination, a vetting process and finally training at the academy in St Helens.
