Merseyside man rediscovers 'lost hobby' to win Albert Dock 'Autumn sunset' photo competition

Last month the ECHO ran a competition with the Albert Dock to find the best sunset photos of the iconic Liverpool landmark and the winner said it helped him rediscover a 'lost hobby'.

The winning photo, taken by Merseysider Richie Kilkelly, was picked by the judges - which included the ECHO's Colin Lane - out of nearly 200 entries. Scroll down to see other four photos shortlisted. Richie, who took the photo, is a 54-year-old compliance manager from Ainsdale and entering the competition after taking the picture in a 'split second' due to the beautiful colours in the sky.

He said: “I was into photography in my youth but always saw it as a hobby. As life went on - getting married, raising kids, I lost touch with the hobby, so didn’t really consider myself to be a keen photographer. However, entering the competition has been a great way to fall back into photography again and restart the love for a lost-hobby.”

Richie, who grew up going to the Albert Dock for meals to celebrate family events, shared the story of his winning photo. He said: “I walk past the Royal Albert Dock a few times a week when I head to the car park, as I work in Kings Dock. This photo was taken in a split second decision due to the colours - it was so lovely I just had to take a photo, when you see a moment and you know it’s special, you just have to capture it.”

As winner of the competition, Richie will receive a prize package that includes the perfect autumn evening at the dock complete with sundowner cocktails, dinner, an overnight stay at Holiday Inn Express, plus a gift voucher for the latest camera equipment.

Royal Albert Dock estate manager, Sean Morrison said, “We’ve been blown away by the high standard of entries that we’ve had for this competition. The dock remains to be one of the best spots in the city to watch the sunset, and it’s been great to see the beauty of them captured by so many visitors.

“Richie’s photo stood out for us as the winning one due to the eye-catching reflection of the clouds on the water and lovely golden colours, without doubt this image captured the timeless beauty of Royal Albert Dock Liverpool and our historic skyline in all its glory, as Richie said he captured a special moment!” Find out more about what’s happening at the Albert Dock this Christmas here.
