Merseyside job centre covered in anti-Universal Credit graffiti

A Merseyside Job Centre has been covered in graffiti protesting against the government's controversial Universal Credit benefit policy.

Images have surfaced on social media showing the Jobcentre Plus branch covered in graffiti which state 'Universal Cruelty' and 'U.C=Debt, eviction, hunger.'

The various graffiti comments have been written on the front doors, several windows and a large area of wall at the Jobcentre site.

A Facebook post of the images by Jay O'Hagan was shared on the Huyton Times community page and many of those who commented shared the sentiments expressed by the graffiti writer.

One person responded: "Well done, someone finally standing up - all true."

Another said: "Not wrong though, how they think or expect you to live on £110 a week in this modern age is a crime."

And another added: "Who did it? I want to shake their hand."

The roll-out of Universal Credit has caused huge problems for many people across Merseyside.

What is universal credit?

Many struggling families and residents have said the issues with delays of payments, processing errors and incorrect sanctions have left them without food or money to pay energy bills.

The ECHO has reported on countless examples of people who have found themselves forced to visit foodbanks and rely on handouts from friends and family when hit with problems by Universal Credit.

Even the Secretary of State Amber Rudd has admitted that there is a link between the problem-hit system and the use of foodbanks.

The ECHO has joined others in calling for the benefit system to be scrapped and re-thought.

The government continues to insist that Universal Credit is helping people get back into work and is making the benefits system simpler by combining six payments into one monthly sum.

A DWP spokesperson said: “While everyone has the right to protest peacefully, the disgraceful act of vandalism at the Huyton Jobcentre will not be tolerated, and the incident is being investigated.

“The jobcentre is open as usual and services to support our customers will continue without interruption.”
