Merseyside hospital trust sees covid admissions jump 244%

Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust has seen a dramatic spike in Covid-19 patients.

In just a week the trust has seen a rise of 244% in patients with Covid-19.

On Tuesday, June 29 the hospital trust had nine positive cases, with the number of cases since jumping to 22. Despite the rising numbers, just one extra patient has been put on a ventilator, with that number going from two to three.

The country has seen a rise in cases overall with restrictions easing but Sefton has seen its coronavirus rate more than double in just a fortnight.

Figures from July 4 show the borough has an infection rate of 469 per 100,000 people. Two weeks prior, on June 20, the infection rate was 199 per 100,000 people.

In the last seven days England had an infection rate of 275 per 100,000 people.

The World Health Organisation also announced recently that the North West is in the top 10 Covid hotspots in Europe, with the region being placed at number eight in the rankings.

This comes as Boris Johnson is expected to announce that all Covid restrictions will be scrapped on Monday despite the rising rates across the country.
