Merseyside derby referee confirmed and he has recent history with Liverpool

Martin Atkinson will referee the Merseyside derby on Monday evening.

The 48-year-old has history with both Liverpool and neighbours Everton, and only this season left Reds fans fuming after failing to spot a foul on Divock Origi in the build up to Manchester United's opener in the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford .

Atkinson was officiating when Origi was hacked down by Victor Lindelof but waved play on to allow Marcus Rashford to score.

The Yorkshire-born official endured a torrid afternoon and was heavily criticised in the aftermath of the game

Atkinson has taken charge of six previous Merseyside derbies, handing out three red cards in the process.

He infuriated Everton fans in October 2011 when he sent off Jack Rodwell for a challenge on Luis Suarez that was later recinded.

Liverpool have won three of the six games he has officiated, drawing the other three.
