Merseyside council to lead minute's silence for people who died from coronavirus

A council in Merseyside will lead a minute's silence for people who have died from coronavirus in the borough.

Sefton Council announced today that they will hold the tribute during a virtual cabinet meeting at 10am on Thursday, June 25.

The local authority has asked for residents to join them in remembering those who have died from COVID-19.

According to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 269 people died in Sefton from coronavirus between March 1 and May 31.

It is understood this number has risen to 272 in June.

The silence will be led by council leader Ian Maher and chief executive Dwayne Johnson, with residents across the borough encouraged to fall silent at the same time.

Councillor Maher said the local authority will never forget those who battled against COVID-19 during the pandemic.

He added the council understood this was a very difficult time for people who had lost loved ones to the virus and passed on the local authority's deepest sympathies.

"Please if you wish to join us from 10am on Thursday, June 25, in falling silent as a mark of remembrance to those we have lost."
