Merseyside childminder 'compromised children's safety' according to Ofsted

A Merseyside childminder has received the lowest possible Ofsted rating after 'significantly compromising' children's safety and welfare.

The carer was also criticised for not ensuring good hygiene routines were followed, and not encouraging children to wash their hands before eating.

The childminder, who is based in Crosby but is not named in the report, operates from 7.30am-5pm, Monday to Friday during term time.

She currently looks after three children, all of whom are under five.

Inspectors say children's safety and welfare have been significantly compromised. Part of the report says: "She does not know how to respond promptly to signs of abuse or neglect.

"[She] does not consistently promote children's good hygiene... she does not encourage children to wash their hands before eating.

"[She] does not keep her skills and knowledge up to date.

"This childminder does not explain to children how to keep themselves safe."

The recent inspection did, however, show the children in her care are settled and have close bonds with the childminder. She is also said to have good relationships with parents and maintains suitable behaviour boundaries.

Ofsted has given the woman a list of improvements she must make by April 23. These include improving safeguarding knowledge, and ensuring good hygiene routines are followed to minimise the spread of infection.

As childminders work from their own home, their name and address is classed as ‘personal information’ under the data protection regulations.

Ofsted therefore asks childminders to indicate if they are willing to have their personal details published.

If they do not consent, it is withheld from publication.
