Merseyside Chief Constable tests positive for coronavirus

The chief constable of Merseyside Police has tested positive for coronavirus.

Andy Cooke began self-isolating last week after displaying symptoms associated with the illness.

He received confirmation that he had the condition on Thursday.

Mr Cooke said: “It was reported last week that I had self-isolated from work after developing coronavirus symptoms, I can confirm that yesterday I found out I had tested positive for the virus.

“Despite having had the virus I have been able to continue to represent the force from home and have been working at both a regional and national level with chief officers, Government officials and representatives from other partnership organisations.

“My officers and staff are working hard to reassure and protect our communities and I believe it is incumbent on me in these unprecedented times of uncertainty to continue to support my officers and staff and ensure that the force is in a position to cope with the challenges ahead and keep the people of Merseyside safe.”

As of Thursday morning, 32 cases had been confirmed on Merseyside, with 13 in Liverpool.

While working from home, where the force said he had the facilities to carry out his duties, Mr Cooke has reassured the public his officers would continue to keep them safe.

He said: “I want to take this opportunity to reassure the communities of Merseyside that the force will endeavour to do everything it possibly can to deliver the best possible service during these unprecedented times. And one thing I know about my officers and staff is their desire to help and do everything they can to keep you safe.

“We work closely with partner organisations across the county including local councils, hospital trusts, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, North West Regional Ambulance Service and many other partners to ensure our emergency planning and contingency plans are fit for purpose during times such as these.

“Admittedly, what we are going through now is unprecedented and as such I have no doubt that during the coming months there will be learning for all of us. But I can promise that we will be doing everything we possibly can to keep the public of Merseyside safe until we return to a state of normality.”
