Merseyside café serving ‘cheap and cheerful’ full English breakfast for under £5

A café in New Brighton in Wirral offers “cheap and cheerful” breakfasts to suit everyone’s taste buds, including full English, toasties, crumpets and more.

Smugglers Cave on Victoria Road serves straight up tasty breakfasts for great prices. When I visited on a sunny Thursday morning, it was full of locals enjoying their breakfasts and sipping coffee and tea while chatting away both inside and outside the café.

I was greeted warmly by the staff and given the last table available inside. As soon as the menu was placed in my hand, I was very impressed with the choices and the prices - it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a full English breakfast for less than £5.

The full English comes in different sizes - small (£4.35), medium (£5.50) and large (£6.50). I opted for the small breakfast which came with one piece of bacon, one sausage, black pudding, a fried egg, beans and two slices of toast, and ordered a latte (£2.20) to go with it.

The service was very quick with my breakfast and drink arriving piping hot within 10 minutes. The latte came in a big mug on a little serving tray with a beach scene - perfect for a café near the seaside. The latte was nice and milky with a strong coffee taste which was much-needed at 9am.

The fried egg had a runny yolk, the bacon and sausage were cooked perfectly, and the toast was thick white bread, much to my delight . I have to say the standout component of the breakfast was the black pudding. I’m not usually a big fan of black pudding, but Smugglers Cave’s was delicious. It’s the first time I've finished the whole lot of it!

Overall, I was very impressed with the tastiness of the food and the prices. Smugglers Cave has a real community feel and a happy atmosphere with people chatting away to each other. If you’re in New Brighton and fancy a fuss-free breakfast in a casual setting, this Victoria Road café is the place to go.
