Merseyside art galleries join in the battle for #bestmuseumbum

Which art gallery possesses the best bottom in its collection? This is the challenge posed by Yorkshire Museum that has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Unable to welcome visitors inside their buildings during lockdown, venues across the globe have been engaged in a Top Trumps-style Curator Battle on Twitter.

And the subject that has understandably won the most reaction has been #bestmuseumbum.

The Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead was quick to respond to the challenge, posting Male Nude by 20th century Liverpool artist Stanley Reed with the simple caption: "Just putting this here."

While, Victoria Gallery & Museum on Brownlow Hill in Liverpool city centre got a bit more carried away, tweeting: "Oooh cheeky! This rear view snap of Frederic Leighton's The Sluggard is absolutely peach perfect, don't you think?"

The bronze figure was created in 1890, based on the artist's Italian model Guiseppe Valona, and is believed to have been inspired by seeing him standing up and stretching after a long session posing for the artist.

Since Yorkshire Museum's original tweet, venues all over the world have joined the campaign to show off their perfect posteriors, including the V&A in London, the Museo de Cadiz in Spain and the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Japan.
