Merseyrail users slam idea to ban food on UK trains

Earlier this week the Chief Medical Officer suggested that eating on public transport should be banned to stop kids from snacking.

Dame Sally Davies called for MPs to ban food on buses and trains  and to impose a calorie cap on the servings sold to people at fast food outlets and cafes.

She also suggested the sugar tax should be extended to milk drinks containing sugar such as milkshakes and for ministers to consider plain packaging for unhealthy food.

But her suggestion has gone down like a lead balloon among many people - including ECHO readers.

When we asked what people thought about Merseyrail potentially having to ban eating on their trains, most people slammed the idea.

Harry Owen said: "No sometimes it’s the only rest time to eat."

Tracey Collins said: "What if you're eating something healthy like grapes. Who will be the bad snacks police."

Jennifer said: "I think eating on transport is sometimes necessary ie diabetics, however as long as the person is respectful and removes all rubbish when they leave the bus/train I don't see what the issue is."

@Robertlewis2000 said: "How would you enforce it?"

And Lucy Bustin simply replied "Nanny state."

But some people were in favour of the idea.

Karen Phillips said: "Yes am all for this."

And Margaret Senior said: "Yes they should.

While Vikki Phippard said: "I don’t want to listen to an adult eating, making noises, smacking their lips or wiping their hands on the seat I could potentially be sitting on.. however many adults also can’t control their own eating habits, let alone their children’s.."
